Managing Type 2 Diabetes: Diet, Habits and Medication Basics

India has one of the world’s largest diabetic populations, yet type 2 diabetes is one of the most manageable chronic conditions when diet, movement and medicines work together.

The plate method

Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein (dal, paneer, eggs, fish) and a quarter with whole grains. Swapping refined carbs for whole grains flattens the post-meal sugar spike that does long-term damage.

Movement is medicine

A 15–20 minute walk after meals measurably lowers post-prandial glucose. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly, plus simple strength work — muscle is where glucose gets used.

Understanding modern medicines

Metformin remains the foundation. Newer classes work differently: DPP-4 inhibitors (like teneligliptin) boost the body’s own insulin response, SGLT2 inhibitors (like dapagliflozin) remove excess glucose through urine and protect the heart and kidneys, and combinations bring these together in one tablet for better compliance. Your doctor chooses based on your HbA1c, weight and kidney function.

The numbers that matter

Know your HbA1c (3-month average), fasting and post-meal readings, blood pressure and lipids. Testing regularly beats guessing — complications are largely preventable when numbers stay in range.
