Every monsoon brings the same visitors — sore throats, blocked noses and coughs that hang around for weeks. Humidity helps viruses linger, and sudden wet-dry temperature swings stress the airways.
Prevention first
Wash hands often, avoid touching the face, dry off promptly after getting wet, and keep indoor air moving to limit mould. Warm fluids through the day keep the throat’s natural defences working; vitamin C, zinc and adequate sleep support immunity.
Reading your cough
A dry, tickly cough with sneezing and watery eyes usually signals an allergic or viral irritation — antihistamines and decongestant combinations bring relief. A wet, chesty cough needs mucus thinned and moved out — that is where ambroxol and guaiphenesin-based expectorant syrups help. Wheezing or chest tightness points to bronchospasm, where bronchodilators like terbutaline or levosalbutamol combinations are prescribed.
For children
Steam, saline drops and paediatric-dosed syrups are the mainstays; natural vaporizing drops with eucalyptus and camphor ease blocked noses at night. Never use adult formulations for young children.
See a doctor if
Fever lasts beyond three days, breathing is laboured, or a cough persists past two weeks — these need proper evaluation, not another cough syrup.
